Downburst, Benton Range, Eastern California, 2002

Print # 239 - Downburst, Benton Range, Eastern California, 2002

October 1, 2002 @ 12:10pm

Prior to taking this photograph I was about 7 miles to the west of this location along McGee creek photographing but was forced to pack up my camera gear due to strong winds, snow and cold. As I was driving back down the McGee creek road I noticed this scene off in the distance towards the east, so I quickly pulled my truck over to grab a map to see which road would best place me in position to photograph this huge downburst of snow. I quickly determined that I needed to get back on highway 395 and head north about 3 miles and take Benton Crossing east. Once I was on Benton Crossing I quickly looked for a side road to stop and photograph and I soon found one. This downburst was changing so quickly that in the process of taking four photographs of the sceen I had to reposition the camera more and more to the right after each exposure to keep the main downburst centered, however it managed to drift too far off to the right within the frame inbetween the time it took to compose the image, set the exposure, aperture and insert the film holder and trip the shutter in all but one negative, the image above.
